چکیده

The formation of hydrogen lines in dense plasmas in the presence of a uniform magnetic field is studied. The theory is developed for physical conditions (temperature, electronic density, magnetic field) characteristic of those encountered in the atmospheres of magnetic Ap and Bp stars. This is the first treatment of this problem dealing simultaneously with the Stark effect due to the electric microfields generated by the plasma ions and electrons, the Zeeman effect induced by the magnetic field, and the Stark effect that arises from the Lorentz electric field that the radiating atom is seeing as a result of its motion in the magnetic field. The contribution of the ions is calculated taking into account their dynamics. The Lorentz field introduces a coupling between the intrinsic line broadening and the Doppler effect due to the thermal motion, which in principle severely increases the complexity of the calculations. Special attention is paid to this aspect, and to the discussion of the conditions under which a simplified numerical treatment can be applied.

The physical foundations of stellar magnetic field diagnosis from polarimetric observations of hydrogen lines

We have completed a new study of the formation of hydrogen lines in dense magnetized plasmas. We have developed a global formalism including the effects of the magnetic field and of the motional electric field. The latter, resulting from the motion of the radiating hydrogen atom in the magnetic field, modifies the structure of the matrices appearing in the equation of transfer of the Stokes vec...

Atmospheres and Spectra of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars – Iii. Partially Ionized Hydrogen Models

We construct partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere models for magnetized neutron stars in radiative equilibrium with surface fields B = 1012−5×1014 G and effective temperatures Teff ∼ a few×105−106 K. These models are based on the latest equation of state and opacity results for magnetized, partially ionized hydrogen plasmas that take into account various magnetic and dense medium effects. The ...

Thermal Structure and Cooling of Superfluid Neutron Stars with Accreted Magnetized Envelopes

We study the thermal structure of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes composed of accreted material, using updated thermal conductivities of plasmas in quantizing magnetic fields, as well as equation of state and radiative opacities for partially ionized hydrogen in strong magnetic fields. The relation between the internal and local surface temperatures is calculated and fitted by an analyt...
